Libyan Green Programme Supports Sierra Leone Food Security

A total of ten modern tractors have been handed over to the Sierra Leone Government by the Libyan Ambassador to Sierra Leone Dr. Mohamed Al-Harari Abdul Salaam on Friday April 3rd 2009 at Teko near Makeni.

The gesture is as a result of the Libyan Leader Colonel Muammar Qadhafis response to Sierra Leones need for assistance in ensuring food security for the country is achieved.

The Green Programme which is being supported by the Libyan Government will initially provide for rice cultivation of 5, 000 acres in the Makeni environs including Bankapoto and Rolako agricultural farm lands.

In addition to the tractors, the Libyan Government has provided also 10 technicians and operators and technicians for the various farmlands. The aid package will also include provision of fuel and lubricant for the operation of the tractors. The Libyan Government will also be maintenance service the tractors.

First Ploughing Ceremony at Teko Climaxing the Launching Ceremony

At an impressive launching ceremony at Teko near Makeni on April 3, 2009, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Sam Sesay, who received the donation on behalf of Government of Sierra Leone praised the effort of the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Qadhafi for great assistance to African nations including Sierra Leone. Accepting the donation on behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone, the Agriculture Minister Dr. Sam Sesay expressed appreciation to the Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Qadhafi, the Government and people of Libya for their continued support to Sierra Leone.

Dr. Sesay welcomed the Libyan support and noted that it will live an indelible imprint in the minds of Sierra Leoneans, especially when the aid package is complete and full.

The Minister said this is the first time that not only tractors have been donated, but are accompanied by personnel, maintenance service, fuel and maintenance service.

He assured the Libyan Envoy of providing the enabling environment for the project to succeed and also wished the Libyan operators a happy stay in the country. The Minister noted that the Makeni farmlands are suitable for the project and that the majority of farmers who are mostly women are well organized and have formed cooperative groups to enhance maximum productivity.

Earlier, the Libyan Envoy, Dr. Mohamed Al-Harari AbdulSalaam outlined the objectives of the Green Programme. Dr. Abdul Salaam disclosed that it is the dream of the Libyan Leader Muammar Qadhafi to ensure that Africa is able to feed itself which is why his country has decided to assist Sierra Leone and other African countries to achieve food security and sufficiency.

He said the Libyan operators and technicians who form part of the project will have the opportunity of interacting with their fellow Africans, and in the process they will transfer skills and knowledge to local farmers. The Libyan Ambassador promised to monitor the project very closely.

The ceremony attracted senior officials of theMinistries of Agriculture and Local Government, Members of Parliament, traditional rulers, local farmers and Madam Alice Koroma, mother of His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma.
