At about 11:45am yesterday 23rd April 2009, 601 parcels of cocaine were burnt to ashes by a combined team of Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and IMATT personnel.

The burning which took place at the Bormeh dumping site at Kingtom, Freetown, was witnesses by scores of government functionaries including no less a person than the Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Abu Bakarr Sidique Sam Sumana.

In a brief statement before the burning, the Inspector General of Police, Brima Acha Kamara, noted that "This day marks another important milestone in the history of Sierra Leone and the SLP in particular", adding that the police worked tirelessly to thoroughly investigate and prosecute the cocaine matter which ended with 15 persons convicted.

He lauded the roles played by IMATT, DEA from the United States of America (USA) and many other security agencies in the world, saying investigating the matter and making sure that the exhibit was safe throughout the process demanded a collaborative approach.

He also thanked the judiciary for treating the matter with the seriousness it deserved, and the Government of Sierra Leone for the free hand giving to the police and the judiciary to deal with the matter.

Vice President Samuel Sam Sumana, in his remarks, commended the SLP, the judiciary and other international partners for their efforts in laying the cocaine matter to rest, expressing regret that 27 % of cocaine around the world passes through West Africa, Sierra Leone inclusive.

He described this as alarming, assuring that his government will not sit back and allow people to use this country as a transit point.

He ended by registering governments commitment to eradicating all drug cartels in the country, warning that anyone caught peddling or using drugs would be dealt with severely.
