Sierra Leone's Democracy Today and Yesterday

As the saying goes, The Devil you know is better than the Angel you dont know. Well, Sierra Leoneans before the 2007 elections, especially Freetown, shouted and some even insulted the effect of a change in governance. That did happen with the assistance of some international workers.

The citizens of Sierra Leone were manipulated to cry for a change of government. They were cajoled to forgetting the Peace and Freedom accorded them during the previous regime. At that time all the valuable components of democracy were to a very large extent respected. Our Freedom of speech, such as rampant messages from musical industries, the right to assemble, right to choice etc were held in a very high esteem. Upon all those, we allowed ourselves to be manipulated and insisted that a change should take place. The change has been enhanced and now Sierra Leoneans have started to cry. So soon the former political tolerance that was widely enjoyed has been replaced with violence, rape and intimidation of media houses. As at yesterday, the most popular female media person, Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, has not been seen in public because as sources reveal, she is hiding for her life. Her media house was ransacked by Police officers and her Accounts clerk whisked away. That has created doubts in the minds of every Sierra Leonean on the promise made by the present government through the information minister that journalists and media houses will never be harassed by the APC government. It is a pity.

The response of this government has not created any doubt in the minds of  who know them. It was speculated that this particular government will resort to violence and that is quickly coming to pass. There so many old tricks of the APC that being manifested in this APC that are worth worrying about. The Peaceful atmosphere that was consolidated by the previous SLPP government has quickly faded out and has been replaced with mistrust. This government has created a big gap of mistrust between the political parties that will be very hard to mend. It must be brought to the notice of those international master minders of this regime change that something must be done to change the present atmosphere.

Lunta.
