Condom Use on the Increase


Local tabloids have revealed that condom use is now on the increase by the Sierra Leonean populace. Accordingly, many people have been educated by stakeholders and the National AIDS Secretariat (NAS) on the use of condoms. Reports also indicate that the Demographic and Health Survey report recently launched, put the prevalence rate at the same 1.5% - an estimated 48,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Sierra Leone.

 

Director of Sports Appoints Desk Officers


Reports state that the Director of Sports Bai Kabia has appointed Desk Officers. The role of the Desk Officers according to the Director is to advise and direct the association on all matters affecting the sporting discipline in the country. The Desk Officers are expected to be familiar with the rules of engagement, discuss program, activities, programs and all correspondences relating to their participation in international events.

 

Naval Boat Accident Left Arms/Munitions Missing


Two weapon magazines with twenty rounds each and a fuel tank are said to have gone missing, following the capsizing of a navy patrol boat in the high seas around Sulima. According to reports, the boat was involved in an accident while on a fishing protection patrol on the south west of the Sierra Leone Liberia border. The boat was rescued alongside all personnel onboard.

 

City Council Goes on the Rampage


Local tabloids have revealed that the Metropolitan Police of the Freetown City Council have raided traders along Siaka Stevens Street and carted away a number of goods from them. The general public has dismissed the move as unjust, saying the council is yet to fulfill its promises on street trading. Reports say the council embarked on the seeming unpopular move because it is currently facing a serious financial crisis.

 

Medical Muslim Jamaat lays Mosque Foundation


The Medical Muslim Jamaat in Kenema has reportedly laid the foundation stone of a Mosque at the hospital compound. According to reports, the Mosque will be constructed by the Badrudden Mission in Kenema District. Reports say it is very rare for hospitals to have a Mosque, but Bo has one and Kenema will soon follow suit.

 

Sylvia Blyden has not committed Treason


Lawyers set to represent the Awareness Times Newspaper Proprietress Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden and Acting Editor Abdul Karim Kabia, have vehemently criticized police intimidation of their clients. The lawyers are quoted to have stated that the police press release to arrest their clients sounded like hunting them down, adding that their clients have not committed treason and so the matter should not be pursed with the kind of vendetta the police are using.

 

Anglican Women feeds Mental Home


The Mothers Union of the Anglican Diocese of Freetown has reportedly fed over one hundred inmates at the Kissy Mental Home in Freetown. According to report, the inmates received bowls of sumptuous jollof rice served with stew and soft drinks. They were also offered packets of garie and sugar, used clothing and several other items. This gesture is reported to have started five years ago.

 

Sierra Queens to Participate in WAFU


The West African Football Union (WAFU) has reportedly included the Sierra Leones Female National team, Sierra Queens, to participate in the WAFU championship. The championship would commence on 21st July and end on 1st August 2009 in Nigeria. Reports state that the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) is now putting modalities in place to select a formidable team that will represent Sierra Leone in the competition.
