The Human Resource Manager who doubles as the Company Secretary of Sierra Leone Brewery Limited (SLBL), Albert Ojo Collier, has on 15th May 2009 cleared the air on the widespread rumour regarding the distribution of expired Heineken drinks for public consumption.

He made this statement in a special press briefing held at the Ministry of Information and Communication conference room in Freetown.

In his statement, Mr. Collier noted that the purpose of the meeting was to clear the air on the scandalous statement going around town about one of the companys product Heineken Lager Beer, which the company is importing for sale in Sierra Leone.

He further stated that the company has never sold any product from their stores when the expired date has elapsed, adding that in their bid to meet the rising demand for Heineken in mid-2008, they ordered a high quantum of Heineken beer from their parent company Heineken International, furthering that soon after the product arrived in Sierra Leone, the global credit crunch affected everybody and as a result, the company experienced a slow down in the sale of the stock.

The Human Resource Manager went on to state that this scandalous rumour about their product has kept the sale of the product to a standstill, pointing out that if not for this, the above product would have been completely sold and consumed by the end of this month. He however assured the general public that Heineken lager beer is of the correct quality for consumption and called on the general public to refrain from harassing their distributors and retailers.

Mr. Collier appealed to stakeholders and the government to give them time to sell the Heineken product before the expiry date, so as to ensure that both the company and the government dont suffer a financial loss.

On his part, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. David Carew, confirmed that the product Heineken lager beer has not yet reached its expiry date. He related the problem to consumers limited knowledge in understanding the products expiry date written beneath the bottle, and blamed the management of the company for failing to do proper public relation on the product.

The minister noted that Heineken lager beer will only be declared expired at the end of May 2009, and admonished the companys management to start monitoring the sale the marketing of the product before reaching the expiry date.
