Lawlessness and mob justice hit Sierra Leone youths

The pace at which acts of lawlessness, indiscipline and mob justice is running through Sierra Leoneans especially the youths, has become nothing good to write home about. The saddest part of it is the fact that people are of the fear that this ugly development has in the recent past increased to an extent that even the police have limited capacity to handle it.

In the early hours of Monday 18th May 2009, the above was demonstrated along the Garrison Street/PZ roundabout when two teenagers, Mohamed Feika and Idrisa Tarawally, alleged to be criminals, were almost beaten to death by youths and traders operating in the general area. This happened in the presence of three police personnel who did absolutely noting to rescue the teenagers.

A street trader, Sallay Kamara, alleged that the two boys tried to rob her black hand bag which she said was lying on top of her market stall, while she was busy arranging her wares.

I shouted when I saw them in their action and this alerted passersby and nearby traders who wasted no time to rush at them with sticks, belts and other harmful items she said.

Even with the presence of the three police personnel whom one of the teenagers ran to for help, the youths still pursued him and beat him up leaving him half dead and all the police officers could do was to escape from the defenseless teenager and stood aside watching and laughing as the irate youths took turn after turn in kicking, punching, slapping and thumping the teenagers.

It was with the help of another defenseless civilian named Mr. Joseph Samura who quickly acted as a Good Samaritan who was passing by and noticed the mob beating up the teenagers, that the boys lives were saved.

When contacted, one of the police officers, a sergeant, stated that Nor to mi sen dem for go tiff, translated in English as meaning I am not the one who sent them to go and steal.

It could be recalled that a group of youths recently gang raped a woman in Kono, whilst others are allegedly to have been mobilized by a man of God to demonstrate and set ablaze a place of worship in the provinces.
