Dear Sir/ Madam,

Compliant: Threat On My Life

I write to officially complain about the incessant threats on my life for the past one week.

I have been inundated with telephone calls anonymous callers threatening to kill me should I continue to write articles about the APC Government and its leadership. As a journalist, the phone calls do not worry me much but my innate concern is the verbal threat and physical attack meted on me. I believe these attacks are meted on me not because I am Umaru Sitta Turay but because I am a journalist. I have been in this profession for quite some time now especially that contributed the thick and thin of the war. I belong to that group of journalists that contributed to the restoration of democracy and the sustenance of good governance.

I therefore want to reiterate that I owe it to my conscience by serving my nation as a professional journalist to publish stories not in the interest of the public but those that are of public inertest.

Therefore, I am looking up to Sierra Leone Association of Journalist (S.L.A.J) to ensure that we dont have another Harry Yansaneh that was publicly beaten with impunity without any due process of the law. In every democratic system, I believe there are open legal channels for redress to every single person should ones reputation is under attack by any medium which is not the violent manner that I am going through.

However, since the first publication of the New people Newspaper under my control as Editor-in-Chief, my life and that of my family are under very serious threat that I need to call the attention of the authorities responsible to ensure my safety. It goes without saying that on Thursday, 14th May, 2009, in front of my office, I narrowly escape death by some young men. These assailants are believed to be APC supporters and State House functionaries. This action on me I believe is a behest of certain functionaries close to the Presidency which has given the cause for the police not to threat the matter with seriousness it deserves.

I also want to bring to your notice that the Police have been sending threatening messages to me that I will be arrested if I do not report to them, according to them I have a Counter report case to answer.

I am therefore calling on the international/diplomatic community to ensure that all journalists like me carry their duties unfettered in post conflict countries like Sierra Leone.

Few years ago, it was Harry Yansaneh, a fort night ago, it was a journalist beaten to coma in Kenema and today it is because I am the Editor-in-Chief of the New People Newspaper and tomorrow it could be another person. I strongly believe that this particular government will want to organize a master plan in the future that will eliminate me and my family. Up till yesterday series of threat to kill me are coming in my phone. I received a telephone call from one Ralph Sawyer (functionary of state house) putting me on record to intimate me on this particular event. I crave your indulgence to save my life and that of my family which consist of little children of three (3) and five (5) years old.

Please save lives.
Yours sincerely,

Umaru Sitta Turay
