Thousands of supporters of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party over the weekend flooded the entire Koidu Township in Kono District, to observe their partys 58th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service.

The ceremony attracted thousands of supporters, national executive officers and other prominent members of the party, including the National Party Chairman, John O. Benjamin, the National Secretary General, Jacob Jusu Saffa and the Womens Leader, Mrs. Isatu J. Kabbah (wife of former President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah).

Addressing a mammoth crowd of party supporters at the partys regional secretariat in Koidu City, the National Chairman, John O. Benjamin, described the turnout as spectacular, saying it affirms that their tentacles are widely spreading in that city.

The chairman informed that the new executive has the interest of every member of the party be it old or young, alive or dead at heart, adding that their main objective as a party and executive is to appease those who are not happy with the party, so as to get all those who left the party due to certain reasons, to make a u turn.

He disclosed that the high power delegation was in the district to formerly launch the party in Kono District and to pay respect to the late Reverend Paul Dumba, a founding member and one time national chairman of the party.

Chairman Benjamin described the launching as the rebirth of the party, and urged members to see themselves as joint owners.

He appealed to party members to be enemies of violence and thuggery, and abide strictly by the laws of the land.

He sensitized members about the recently signed communiqu with the ruling All Peoples Congress Party (APC) on the cessation of all acts of political violence.

On his part, the Secretary General of the party, Jacob Jusu Saffa, acknowledged the huge turnout of supporters, noting that it is a signal that Kono District is indeed a notable strong hold of the SLPP.

He assured members in the district that the party is in high gear to put up a remarkable showing in the upcoming 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The National Womens Leader, Madam Isatu J. Kabbah, in her remarks, commended the people of Kono for coming out in their thousands to grace what she referred to as a remarkable occasion that will benefit the entire Kono land in the not too distant future.
