Investigations conducted by this reporter have shown that the local market has recently been flooded with expired Heineken Beer imported and marketed by the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited (SLBL).

According to investigations, there are hundreds of thousands of cartons of this expired commodity presently stored at the warehouse of the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited, in the far east of Freetown.

Speaking to an official of the SLBL who prefers anonymity, on Sunday 24th May 2009, he confirmed that the product has indeed expired, but that the management of the company is at the moment trying to speed up with the marketing of the product so as to raise some money to cover up the huge losses suffered.

Market sources also revealed that the beer is now being sold at a very low cost of Le 1,500 (One Thousand Five Hundred Leones) per bottle, as compared to its original cost of Le 4,000 (Four Thousand Leones).

Market sources further revealed that a good number of people have reported cases of diarrhea and other health complications after consuming the said beer.

According to sources close to the SLBL, the beer in question was imported by the company with a short term expiry date of May 31st this year, and according to medical sources also, the beer will no longer be good for human consumption after it would have passed the stipulated expiry date which could be found at the bottom of the bottle.

Reports say the company should have stopped selling the product by now, but that it is still found in the market in large supplies.

It could be recalled that two weeks ago, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Standards Bureau at a weekly press conference organized by the Ministry of Information and Communication, explained to journalists the bad state of the said beer.

This was followed by a press release issued by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, condemning the continued marketing of the product.

Meanwhile, brewery officials have insisted that the controversial beer is best before the end of May, 2009.
