Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Member of Parliament representing Constituency 7 in the Kailahun District, Honourable Robin Farley, Tuesday 26th May 2009 made an impressive presentation on the health and sanitation system in Sierra Leone.

Hon. Robin Farley: A vibrant MP indeed

Hon. Robin Farley was addressing a high powered delegation from the Common Wealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), United Kingdom Branch, at the conference room of parliament building in Freetown.

In his presentation, Hon. Farley disclosed that health sector is a major component of the human development priority of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) and economic development in Sierra Leone, adding that in Sierra Leone, health facilities are provided by the government, non-governmental organizations, traditional healers and private individuals.

He said some functions of the health sector were devolved at local level through the provision of the Local Government Act of 2004.

Hon. Robbin further highlighted some of the challenges facing the health sector, starting with inadequate funding, lack of trained and qualified personnel, poor coordination of programmes especially in rural communities, shortage of essential drugs, accessibility and mobility to enhance health facilities in Sierra Leone.

He urged that the health sector be capacitated as part of the much talked about Agenda for Change, so as to effectively meet the health needs of the entire citizenry.

He also urged that keen attention be paid to the areas of reproductive and child health, nutrition, malaria control, sexual service, infrastructure, water and sanitation.

Representing the Common Wealth Parliamentary Association, the Head of delegation, who also doubles as a Member of Parliament in Great Britain, Clain Curtis-Thomas, disclosed to journalists that CPA is working for Parliamentary Democracy throughout Common Wealth countries.

She said the main aim of their visit to Sierra Leone is to enable the British Parliamentarians to gain a better understanding of their colleagues in Sierra Leone.

She said the main objectives of their visit include trying to understand the work of their Sierra Leonean counterparts; learn more about the implementation of the PRSP in Sierra Leone; know about Sierra Leones progress in the Millennium Development Goals; get a better insight of the effectiveness of international aid programmes and access the impact of climate change and the current global economic downturn.
