National Revenue Authority
Public Notice

The National Revenue Authority views the Press as a major component in sustainable National development drives. Successfully mobilising revenue for Nation building demands a collective effort with all sectors of society.

Currently, a modernisation programme aimed at increasing national revenue whiles reducing costs implications is on course. It is also aimed at advancing revenue collection processes and streamlining procedures by adopting methods and measures that will put the NRA in line with acceptable international best practices and trends.

Part of this modernisation programme is the reviewing of tax policies and laws and adopting practices that are investor friendly and at the same time legally robust. The Goods and Services Tax Bill is currently in parliament and has passed the second reading stage. The Goods and Services Tax will replace seven existing taxes; these include the Import Sales Tax, Domestic Sales Tax, Restaurant Tax, Entertainment Tax and Professional Services Tax. Tax Payers Identification Number (TIN) has also been introduced. It will make the tracking of taxpayers records very simple thus reducing time wasting and enhancing efficiency in dealing with taxpayers concerns.

ASSYCUDA++ is a new system that entails automatically declaring goods at Customs for clearance. It is a computer based information tool that provides a direct electronic link between importers, their agents and the Customs Department for the recording and clearance of goods and the collection of revenue. It will bring immediate advantages to all involved in the import, export and transit of goods.

With funding from DFID-UK and support from other stakeholders preparations are currently being made to re-open the Customs Posts at Koindu, Baelu and Beudu in the Kailahun District in June 2009.

In line with its policy of partnership for sustainable national development, the National Revenue Authority is collaborating with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) to conduct a joint two-day training on the theme, "Collective Responsibility for Revenue Mobilisation and National Development".

Hosted at the Kimbima Hotel, Aberdeen from the 27th - 28th MAY 2009, the workshop will focus on the role of the media in revenue mobilisation, understanding the dynamics of taxation in Sierra Leone and the media as compliant tax payers.
