The Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation on Wednesday 27th May 2009 embarked on several unannounced visits to various hospitals and health centers in the Western Area. This move by Mr. Mohamed Daudis Koroma was part of his on-the-spot visits of various hospitals and health centers across the country.

Deputy Health Minister

During the visits, the Deputy Minister called on health personnel to redouble their efforts in the discharge of their duties, in order to achieve quality health care delivery in the country.

Accompanied by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kisito Sheku Daoh, the Director of Hospitals and Laboratory Services, Dr. Duramani Conteh and the District Medical Officer, Western Area, Dr. Samuel Juana Smith, the Deputy Minister, during his visit at the Lumley Hospital, underscored the importance of patients care, proper records keeping in relation to the use of drugs, medical supplies and equipment.

Mr. Mohamed D. Koroma observed that there were no proper recording and accounting systems on the handlings of the cost recovery drugs, whilst urging the hospital pharmacist, Joseph George to work towards a system that would ensure transparency, probity and accountability.

Deputy Health and Sanitation Minister, Mohamed Daudis Koroma while interacting with the Hospital Superintendent, Dr. Virginia George and Matron Josephine Gbakie, reiterated the need for quality and efficient health care delivery services in all government health facilities as well as other clinics and hospitals in the country, adding that patients care and accessibility to health facilities must be seen as a priority.

Responding to some of the major constraints in the hospital, Mr. Koroma promised to discuss the issue with the Ministrys Top Management Team with a view to addressing the most urgent needs, and encouraged the doctors and nurses to work toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals relating to heath care delivery.

The Hospital Superintendent, Dr. Virginia George expressed appreciation over the visit of the Deputy Minister and team, describing it as a catalyst for progress and development.

Dr. George said some of the major constraints faced by the hospital include the lack of an ambulance Service, inadequate theatre drugs, operating table, theatre bed and light, and a generator to run the 35 Beds hospital on a 24 hours service.

The Deputy Minister and team were taken on a conducted tour of the various units of the hospital.

The Murray Town Community Health Centre was also among the on-the-spot checks of the Deputy Minister.
