Salary Increment Fails

Reports have disclosed that the ten percent increment in salary for public servants as announced by the APC Government some months back is not reflecting in their salary packages as promised. According to reports, there was a huge anticipation among cash strapped government workers over the weekend. They are saying that their present salary scale cannot cover all their expenditures for the month and are therefore appealing to government to effect the much needed increment.

The Aged confront Land Grabbers at Goderich

Reports say some aged people at Goderich, in the outskirts of Freetown, have expressed grave concern over the encroachment on their lands at Goderich. James Kamara, Alhaji A.R Sophia Cole, Rev Kofi Goodwill, Haja Isata Sesay and Isaac Freeman are among the elders whose lands have been encroached upon. According to reports, all these aged people inherited the said lands from their parents since the 1920s and 30s.

52 Kroo Bay Women Graduate in Skills Training

52 women selected from the Kroo Bay slum community in Freetown have reportedly received certificates after undergoing training in tailoring, hair dressing, computing, photography and adult literacy. The training was facilitated by the Centre for Women Empowerment in Sierra Leone through the support of Youth Action International. According to reports, seven sewing machines, computers with internet facilities and hair dressing implements were donated by Youth Action International to the women in a bid to enable them up start their own businesses.

Well Woman Clinic Launches Cancer Screening Unit

Local tabloids say the Well Women Clinic at Congo Cross has reportedly launched the Breast Cancer Screening Unit to treat women suffering from the disease in Sierra Leone. Reports say 7.9 million women are dying of Breast Cancer annually worldwide and 72% of these deaths are occurring in low and middle income countries. The World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation have reportedly assured the clinic of their continuing support.

Blind School Appeals for Support

Local tabloids say the Milton Margai School for the Blind on Wilkinson Road in Freetown has appealed to government and humanitarian organizations for support. According to reports, the school is facing so many difficulties especially in the areas of teaching and learning materials, portable type writers, writing frames and the late payment of government subventions. Many organizations and individuals have reportedly donated food and other items to the school, with much more needed.

Sierra Leone Police joins UNAMID

Reports say more than 60 Sierra Leone Police officers have recently joined the African Unions United Nations Mission in Dafur (UNAMID). UNAMIDs Deputy Police Commissioner, Adeyemi Ogundemilusi was reported to have stated that the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) will help strengthen the efforts of the Missions Police component that will be ensuing peace and stability in Dafur. Reports say other SLP officers will soon follow.

MPs Sympathise with Fire Victims

Local tabloids have revealed that a high powered delegation of the Western Area Parliamentary Caucus has paid condolence to the families of fire victims at Kollen Town. According to reports, two children lost their lives and properties worth millions of leones destroyed during the incident. Speaking to the bereaved family, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon Victor Chukuma Johnson, implored them to be courageous and believe that everything is destined by God. He advised them to be very careful with the use of petrol and other inflammable substances in their dwelling places.

City Council to Demarcate Streets

Reports have revealed that the Freetown City Council (FCC) in partnership with the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) will soon start a demarcation exercise on 14 streets in the Municipality of Freetown. Accordingly, council officials are doing a feasibility study in the business central district of Freetown. The demarcation will take the form of partitioning the roads with lasting paints for packing spaces.
