The Secretary General for the largest Regional Branch of Sierra Leones main Opposition Party has yesterday revealed to this writer that SLPP members in his Western Area Region which includes Freetown the capital city, are dismayed and disappointed at those in their partys hierarchy who took part in the legitimisation of the infamous May 22nd Report of the UN Secretary General on Sierra Leone. Ezekiel Duramany Lakkoh, an academic and policy researcher, is no stranger to grassroots politics and has a firm following amongst SLPP members in the Western Area. He reveals that last Saturdays event by the United Nations at the National Stadium, was "deliberately boycotted" by most SLPP members in the Western Area who are "so, so bitter at the contents of the U.N. Report".

Ezekiel Duramany Lakkoh: SLPP Western Area Secretary General is no stranger to Grassroots Politics. He has expressed serious concern for the well-being of ordinary SLPP members rather than for the egos of some of the National Executive members

"We have nothing against those musicians hired by the UN to go and sing at the National Stadium; SLPP Western Area admires and loves those musicians but how can we go to the Stadium to celebrate the existence of a Report that has whitewashed egregious acts of members of ruling APC party whilst at the same time has unduly damaged our partys reputation around the world?" Lakkoh calmly posited.

Ezekiel Lakkoh is a popular all-rounder who is no stranger to local politics. A regular traveller to many countries, Lakkoh is a former University Students Union President who is now a University Lecturer and Executive Director of the Freetown based Institute of Research and Policy Management. Yesterday, he was more concerned with the interests of the ordinary members of the SLPP who are usually the ones who suffer the brunt of violent victimisation.

According to the Western Area SLPP Scribe, the SLPP National Executive should have formally written to the current President of the UN Security Council, the Chairman of the UNs Peace Building Commission and the UN Secretary General, to demand for the Report to be rejected and thrown out as it was "so erroneous and highly misrepresenting of the facts".

"Before being deliberated upon at the Security Council, that Report should have been reconstructed to reflect the reality here in Sierra Leone. It is only Reports that are based on the truth that will ensure Sierra Leone gets a sustainable peace and tranquillity," Lakkoh asserted adding that "political and diplomatic manipulation of certain selfish SLPP Executive members was a sure recipe to disaster".

"Some of these unscrupulous people did it in 2007 and it was ordinary SLPP members who suffered the consequences and are still suffering. Some of us will not sit by idly and allow them to repeat their betrayal of us again. We owe it to the membership to now start speaking out against them regardless of what positions they may hold in our National Executive," Lakkoh ended.

Meanwhile, many grassroots supporters of the SLPP have told this newspaper in strong terms that they are fully aware that some party members are more interested in their vaulting 2012 Presidential Elections ambitions than in the general interests of the SLPP as an entity.

"We know them and we are watching them betray our Party but they are going to get shocked when the time comes," an SLPP Constituency Chairman remarked yesterday.
