The 10th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Sierra Leone Association of Non Governmental Organizations (SLANGO) has ended at the Presidential Lounge of the National Stadium, Brookfields in Freetown.

SLANGO Coordinator, Mrs Shellac Davies

The meeting that attracted several distinguished personalities was held on Friday 19th June 2009.

In her presentation, the National Coordinator of SLANGO, Mrs. Shellac Davies noted that the total number of paid up members of her association is 176, clarifying that 17 of the said members are new national NGOs, whilst 8 are new international NGOs.

She furthered that: "There has been a 65% decrease in membership, of which 40% was amongst the National NGOs" The present economic conditions that have had adverse effect on NGO activities overall, featured prominently among the factors forwarded by the coordinator for the increase, as she puts it: "This has led to some NGOs downgrading to CBOs".

On the achievements of SLANGO, she informed her audience that the strategic plan, which involves consulting, verifying and validating, was completed in March 2009. In that vein, Mrs. Davies expressed appreciation to the African Capacity Building Foundation in Zimbabwe for not only funding the process, but for also equipping the SLANGO Secretariat; paying the cost for setting up the SLANGO Website and for providing the Secretariat with internet access for the year 2008 and 2009. "I am please to state that the monthly Sectoral meetings which had been activated in July 2007 are still ongoing and that the three other sectors have been added on. That is women, youth and agriculture, so we now have a total of five monthly sectoral meetings taking place," she pointed out. As per the recommendations from the strategic plan and the last AGM for SLANGO to establish focal points in the Regional Head Quarter Towns, the association has in March 2008 established focal points in Makeni, Kenema, Bo and Koidu.

"In June 2008, we received funding of thirteen thousand pounds from the Westminster for Democracy, to carry out an analysis of M&E methods used by organisations both NGOs and CBOs involved in CEDAW AND 1325, in Sierra Leone this project is still ongoing," she disclosed. Speaking on the challenges, Mrs. Shellac Davies pointed out that a major challenge she saw looming in the future was that of growth and change management. She however, stated that with the help and leadership of the Board, SLANGO is dealing with ensuing challenges.

Sierra Leone Peoples Party Member of Parliament, Hon. Eric Jumu commended SLANGO for its good work in regulating NGOs activities in the country. He called on the organization to decentralize its activities. He urged them to work in collaboration with the government in order for development to be realized.

Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Richard Konteh assured SLANGO of governments commitment in supporting the activities of the association. He therefore urged all NGOs in the country to be united under SLANGO.

Meaningful contributions were made by several distinguished personalities.
