UNHCR Marks World Refugee Day

The United Nations Refugee Agency has reportedly commemorated World Refugee Day across the country with an awareness campaign on the activities of refugee and displaced persons. According to reports, the celebration was very significant as it strengthened the relationship between the refugees and the host communities in Sierra Leone and other parts of the world. The occasion was marked by a series of activities ranging from radio discussion, public debate and quiz competition.

Health Ministry Boost Tokeh Residents

Local tabloids say the newly built Tokeh Community Health Centre has been officially opened to members of the public. According to reports, the health centre was built by the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) in 2005, but was not used by the people as one lawyer Philo Jones claimed ownership of the land on which the centre was constructed. The centre has been equipped by many drugs and equipment with health personnel.

World Blood Day Commemorated

Local reports say, blood donor recruitment centre in Bo, has joined their counterparts the world over to celebrate World Blood Day in the southern provincial headquarter town of Bo. The activities started with a march-pass along the main streets of Bo City. The celebration was done in order to thank all those who have willingly donated to patients whose lives were in danger. The donor recruitment centre also appealed to everybody to inculcate the habit of donating blood to sick people.

Koya Youths Unite for Development

Hundreds of Youths at Koya, in the Western Rural District have reportedly embarked on the clearing of drainages, local bridges and road maintenance works. The youths are reported to have been provided with food by Chief Adikalie King Kandeh Kamara alias Enshera, for their show of patriotism.

Armed Robbers Attack Samuel Town

Local tabloids have revealed that armed robbers have recently attacked Samuel Town situated just opposite the Benguema military barracks. The robbers were dressed in full military uniform and armed with cutlasses, daggers, guns and sledge hammers. According to reports, three private houses were raided and valuable items such as mobile phones, radio cassette players and other valuable property worth millions of leones carted away.

SLAJ to Petition President Koroma & Ombudsman

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has reportedly resolved to file a petition against President Ernest Bai Koroma and the Ombudsman, Justice Edmond Cowan, in reaction to the failure by the Supreme Court to deliver a verdict in the SLAJ case seeking the repeal of the criminal and sedition libel laws in the statute books. SLAJ has deemed the action as being ultra vires to the countrys 1991 constitution. Members of the association have agreed that the news blackout on the judiciary continues until appropriate action is taken. They also agreed that a peaceful protest be staged on 13th July in Freetown regarding the matter.

Targrin Jetty on the Brink of Collapse

Local tabloids have reported that the Targrin Jetty at Lungi is on the brink of collapse. Reports allege that the beams supporting the jetty have deteriorated at an alarming pace due to long term neglect occasioned by the lack of maintenance. No maintenance work on the jetty has been carried out since the early 1980s.

NRA Collects Le 620 Billion

Local tabloids have revealed that the National Revenue Authority (NRA) was able to collect Le 620 billion as revenue in the 2008 financial year. This amount according to reports, far exceeds the revenue collected in 2007, which was about Le 517 billion.
