The President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, H.E. Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, over the weekend moved the Sewa Ground State Market project by turning the soil for the construction of a modern shopping centre at the heart of the city.
Addressing the huge crowd that turned up to grace the event which was organized by the Freetown City Council at the recently demolished Sewa Grounds site at Victoria Park in Freetown, President Koroma termed the occasion as historic and a success story for his government, the Freetown City Council, traders and above all, the people of the Freetown Municipality.
"We are here to begin the construction of a market which by Godís grace will be an example in the sub-region", he said, adding, "the temporary solution is the construction of stores on the sides to provide quick shelter for over 200 (two hundred) traders as a covering from the rains, to be completed within eight weeks, while the long-term work at the centre would start afterwards for Ďa masterpieceí shopping center.
President Koroma said the occasion was a fulfillment of the promise he made before taking over government that he will make the conditions of the ordinary man better when in governance. "You danced for us, you sang for us, you resisted the Ďkukujumukusí and voted for change. You trusted us. You voted for us so that we will not leave you on the streets or under the rain. This is a peopleís government. This is the ordinary manís government. This party will cure your head aches and your back aches. We are here to give respect to the traders of this country" he opined, underlining the significant role traders play in making the economy buoyant. He assured them that their trust was not misplaced.
Other speakers included the Minister of Internal Affairs Local Government and Rural Development, Dauda Kamara, Minister of Lands Dennis Sandy and the Mayor of Freetown, His Worship Herbert George-Williams.
