PRESS RELEASE

Ambassador Shekou Touray Presents Credentials to Cuban Government

The Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to United Nations, Ambassador Shekou Momodou Touray, who is also accredited as Ambassador-designate to the Republic of Cuba, on Thursday 18th June 2009, presented his Letters of Credence to the Cuban Authorities marking the formal commencement of his assignment to that country. The ceremony was punctuated by a warm hospitality and the usual pomp and pageantry that characterizes such occasions.

Receiving the Ambassadors Letter of Credence as well as that of the recall of his predecessor, Ambassador Joe Pemagbi, the First Vice President, Dr. Jos Ramn Machado Ventura extended a warm hand of welcome to the envoy at the Palacio de la Revolucion in Havana and expressed his Governments appreciation to Sierra Leone for the effort in furthering the longstanding excellent and fruitful bilateral relations that exist between the two countries.

During a 20-minute tte--tte, the two dignitaries discussed a wide range of issues spanning bilateral and multilateral matters, assuring each other of their respective governments commitment to mutual support and the deepening of bilateral relations between the two countries. The envoy further apprised his host on the advances the Government is making in building the peace and promoting sustainable growth and development, adding that challenges abound, particularly in addressing youth unemployment and in stimulating the private sector. He conveyed the Sierra Leone Governments gratitude to the Government and people of Cuba for their continued support to Sierra Leones capacity building and healthcare delivery efforts.

In another engagement, on taking leave of the First Vice President in the accreditation room Ambassador Touray, paid tribute to the memory of one the most accomplished fallen Cuban heroes, Jose Marti at the revolution square, where he laid a wreath by his statue.

While in Havana, the Ambassador also held a series of meetings with various Cuban Government officials on issues of mutual interest to both countries. He also met with the thirteen Sierra Leonean students in Cuba. The Ambassador was accompanied by Counsellor Sulay-Manah Kpukumu.
