In collaboration with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi) and Komfo Amokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) has on Thursday 3rd September 2009 made public the Artemisinin Combination Therapies: Public and Private Market and Policy Survey in Sierra Leone, at a grand ceremony held at Mamba Point, Wilberforce in Freetown.Chairman of the ceremony, Professor George Gauge commended the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and its partners for embarking on such a wonderful survey in order to come up with a credible measure by which malaria can be cured in the country.

He encouraged participants to contribute effectively in ensuring that the survey is critically analyzed and implemented.
The Medical Coordinator of DNDi, Madam Graclela Diap noted that early this year, her organization and KATH Research and Development Unit undertook their first visit to Sierra Leone to meet and establish formal relationship with the MOHS and the National Malaria Control Programme Sierra Leone (NMCP-SL) as well as other stakeholders who has a role in determining the anti malaria policy and its implementation and monitoring in the country.

Upon the success of our first visit to Sierra Leone, we undertook the field market and policy survey, she informed, adding that it was spearheaded by her organisations Research and Development Unit (RDS). She disclosed that the importance of the study to Sierra Leone was to facilitate maximum and rapid impact on various national malaria control efforts via the appropriate use of Artesunate and Amodaqueen (ASAQ), and to ensure that the outcome of the report was easily applied by various implementers and policy makers.

In his keynote address, the Director of Diseases Prevention, Dr. Amara Jambai said the report would allow for evidence based changes and implementation of policy which could be translated to other countries with similar socio-demographic and malaria profiles. He added that it is the fervent hope of the MOHS that surveys of this nature would set a good example for other stakeholders to follow suit.  He however pointed out that the result of the study would contribute immensely in aiding and enabling the government and partners to take appropriate measures in reducing the mortality and mobility of malaria in Sierra Leone.
