The Inspector General of Police has confirmed to the Awareness Times newspaper that he was in possession of a letter inviting him to receive an international leadership award. Mr. Brima Acha Kamara would have to leave the shores of Freetown to receive the 2009 NPIA International Leadership Award at the Alumni Awards Dinner in Bramshill in the United Kingdom. The dinner would be organized by the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) on Thursday 5th November 2009.

The IG was selected for the award, among other reasons, for his successful deliverance of significant policing improvement in the country.

In an exclusive chat with the Awareness Times yesterday at his George Street office, the Inspector General disclosed that he was very happy to receive such an award. He intimated that the honour was not just for him and his family, but an honour for the police force and the country as a whole.

He said the award would serve as an inspiration for him to continue the work well done he commenced years back. He pointed out that sustainable development and national security had been his focus since he assumed the position of IG six years on. He expressed satisfaction that his administration has since been enjoying the political will to operate as an independent body since the period of the Ahmad Tejan Kabbah administration to the present government.

It could be recalled that Mr. Brima Acha Kamara has received several awards, both locally and international, including: The Grand Commander of the Order of Rokel, an honorary Paramount Chief Award crowning him as Chief Komrabai Acha Kamara the Patient, and a host of policing partnership awards.

See Under for a verbatim of the letter sent to the Police Inspector General.

10th August 2009

B.A. Kamara
Inspector General of Police
Sierra Leone Police Headquarters
George Street,
Freetown, Sierra Leone

Dear Commissioner Brima,

It is with great pleasure that I write to you, with news that the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) have selected you as the receipt of the 2009 NPIA International Leadership Award.

This award is in recognition of a committed partner who has shown leadership in working with us and whom we judge has been successful in delivering significant policing improvement in their country. The recommendation also provides testimony to your hard work and commitment to driving through reform of the Sierra Leone Police Force which has earned it the title of a Force for Good.

You have clearly taken forward the experiences and learning you gained from the Overseas Commanders Programme you attended at Bramshill in 2001 and have continued to support our Commanders Programmes with your own senior officers. This has undoubtedly helped you build the strong team around you that has led to making the SLP the respected force it is today.

The panel recognizes that your policing vision forms part of long term commitment to the people of Sierra Leone but that you also understand that collectively, many challenges lie ahead. To that end, we are delighted to honour your achievements in this way. The NPIA International policing strategy will continue to provide support to you in strengthening the rule of law and enhancing citizen safety.

I would like to formally invite you to receive your award at the Alumni Awards dinner at Bramshill, NPIA on Thursday 5th November 2009.

An unprecedented number of UK government and strategic policing leaders will be present at the dinner and it would be a great honour to host you.

Respectfully yours and with my personal congratulations.

Chief Constable Peter Neyroud QPM
Chief Executive
