Owners and staff of unregistered medical institutions that were operating in Freetown were visibly griped with panic when the Deputy Health and Sanitation Minister Mohamed Daudis Koroma and Medical and Dental Council personnel stormed the defaulted locations.

The medical centers, numbering 44, were recently blacklisted by the Health and Sanitation Ministry and the Medical and Dental Council for their failures to register their institutions.

The process to forcefully close down the institutions under review commenced on Thursday 3rd September 2009 when the Deputy Minister alongside the Medical Council staff undertook on-the-spot visits and closed down a good number of the fake medical institutions.

The process is expected to continue this week until such a time when the capital city would have been rid of all unregistered medical institutions.

Few minutes from the hectic exercise, the Awareness Times newspaper interviewed the Deputy Minister, who wasted no time in expressing his Ministrys determination to bring sanity to the countrys health sector.

He said the proliferation of health centers in the country sparked a cause for concern, adding that his ministry in collaboration with the medical council decided to asses in order to ascertain whether these institutions were legitimately operating with trained and qualified medical practitioners.

According to the minister, it was a shock to discover that good numbers of the countrys medical centers were operating unregistered. He added that even some of the doctors in those institutions were untrained and qualified.

Mr. Mohamed Daudis Koroma revealed to the Awareness Times that they had cause to arrest some of the fake doctors, adding that the arrested imposters were helping the police with investigations.

He expressed disappointment that government supplied drugs were found in the possession of most of the institutions. The minister however expressed determination to investigate to the letter, in order to ascertain how the drugs got to the centers.

Although Mr. Mohamed D. Koroma is undoubtedly in the bad books of unfocused and corrupt health personnel due to his zero tolerance stances to corruption, several Sierra Leoneans have lauded the moves of the minister since his appointment.
