NATIONAL SOCIAL SECURITY AND INSURANCE TRUST (NASSIT)

PRESS RELEASE

The attention of the Management of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) has been drawn to several newspaper articles regarding the Trust, but more particularly to an article in the Tuesday 1st September 2009 edition headlined, Those NASSIT Ferries and Wasting Sierra Leonean Tax Payers Money, (carried by other newspapers), a front page article in the Wednesday, 2nd September edition headlined, Heads Must Roll and another article in the Thursday, 3rd September edition headlined, Is NASSIT Investing Well? of the Atomic Newspaper in which the writer made certain baseless and unfounded allegations regarding Senior Officials of the Trust.

Management wishes to categorically state that the said articles are a figment of the writers imagination with the aim of misinforming the general public. It is surprising that the writer who happens to be the Chairman of a major political party would go to such a length to destroy the reputation of a State institution. It is clear from the above articles that the writer does not understand the operations of the Trust.

Management wishes to draw the attention of the writer that the Trust does not have anything like dog allowance, spouse allowance, gardeners allowance, nor is there anything like spousal, fuel, medical or watchmans allowance. In addition, the writer alluded that the Trust usually throws lavish parties, which is not only deceiving and fallacious, but also a ploy to create animosity between the Trust and its esteemed members.

NASSIT wishes to inform the public in general and its cherished contributors in particular that the activities of the Trust are supervised and controlled by a Tripartite Board of Trustees drawn from the Government, employers and employees.

Section 7 of the NASSIT Act states that subject to the approval of the Board, the Trust may invest any part of the fund not immediately required to be expended to meet any of its obligations; and that, the Board, in approving any investment, shall take into consideration the safety and yield, the liquidity, and the need to maintain the real value and spread of the investment, the maintenance of the fund and diversification of the portfolio of the investment, and the harmony of the investment with public interest. The Trust will come out with a detailed statement regarding the status of its investment portfolios for the information of the general public.

NASSIT will also like the public to know that the books and accounts of the Trust are audited by the Auditor General or by an auditor appointed or authorized by the Auditor General as provided for under Section 19 of the NASSIT Act No. 5 of 2001. The Auditor General will then submit to the Board a report of the audit; and the Board will, upon receiving the audit report forward a copy to the Minister who shall include it in the annual report required to be laid before Parliament. So, the idea of entrenched institutional corruption as alleged by the said articles is totally out of the question.

Much as Management recognizes and respects the press as the watchdog of the public, Management would like to implore members of the Fourth Estate to seek clarification from the Public Affairs and Customer Service Division on issues bordering on the activities and operations of the Trust in order to give true, accurate and balanced reporting for the benefit of all Sierra Leoneans.

NASSIT is transparent and accountable to its cherished customers in particular and the public in general.

Let us all join together to make Sierra Leone a better place for everybody
