In Sierra Leone, 50 Graduated Without Certificates

A total of about fifty students are presently wandering without certificates, after successfully completing a course at the Hafab Technical and Vocational Institute situated at 27 Philip Street in Freetown.

This was recently relayed to this press by affected students of the aforesaid institution owned and managed by Mr. Idrissa Kaikor Kamara, a Sierra Leonean based in the United Kingdom and Madam Margaret Lamboi respectively.

The distressed students informed the Awareness Times that they sat to their final exams in March this year, following which they were sent on working experiences in order to improve their abilities on what they have learnt. "Upon completion of our working experiences, we finally graduated on 8th August 2009 without given us any certificates," one of the students who pleaded anonymity said.

The students further alleged that the school administrations had since keep sealed lips on the issue, adding that they have proved reluctant to speak to the affected students. They added that the institution has now proceeded to close down indefinitely.

According to the students, they had summoned the school administration to a meeting prior to the closure of the institution. They alleged that one Mr. Umar Kargbo, who was a senior member of the school, asked them to pay the sum of Le150, 000 per students in order for their certificates to be presented to them. The said sum, according to the students, had already been paid by 15 students who neither are yet to receive their certificates nor briefed of any development.

Madam Margaret Lamboi was reported to have later informed the students that their certificates were with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, alleging that the Director of TECHVOC in the Ministry was refusing to sign the certificates.

In an exclusive chat with the TECHVOC Director, Mr. Godwin Bockarie Samba, he informed the Awareness Times that he was not in possession of any certificate from the aforesaid institution. He however confirmed that the school administration was having a serious problem with the proprietor, thus the delay in releasing the certificates.

Efforts to contact the school administration for comments proved unsuccessful as they continue to forward one dodging excuse to another.
