In Sierra Leone, Suicide for 50 Thousand Leones?

A fifty years old man has died in Freetown, minutes after allegedly drinking a cup full of caustic soda.Mr. Alimamy Santos Kamgbai met his untimely death on Wednesday 9th September 2009 at his No. 10 Looking Town, Kissy residence in the east end of Freetown.

Relatives and friends of the deceased have alleged that the latter killed himself for fear of offsetting a debt of Le.50, 000 (Fifty Thousand Leones), which he owed one Neneh Bangura, a trader residing in the same area.

Younger brother of the lateman, who identified himself as Musa Kamgbai told the Awareness Times that the deceased had earlier requested that "I help him to pay Nenehs money".

He quoted the deceased to have earlier informed him that Neneh has threatened to publicly molest and sue him to court in a weeks time should he fail to offset the debt.

"I then gave him fifteen thousand Leones, as my contribution and he left," the brother explained, adding that "I ceased to see and hear from him since then until his death".

Neighbours were of the strong believe that the death cannot be dissociated with the said debt, as they know the deceased to be a shy and less speaker, who would never stand the shame of been humiliated in public.

The said debt was accrued as a result of separate borrowings that later amounted to a total of Le.50, 000.

The late Santos is survived by a wife, three children and two foster children. His remains have been conveyed to the Mortuary of the Connaught Hospital in Freetown, awaiting burial.

When contacted, Neneh Bangura denied that Santos death was linked to the Le50, 000 the deceased owe her.

She alleged that Santos met her on Monday 7th September 2009 and pleaded that the payment for the debt is postponed to the end of September 2009, adding that she agreed to the appeal.

"So if he commits suicide after our agreement, then I am not sure it was for my money" Neneh noted in tears.
