A child protection non governmental organization has, over the weekend, rendered support to about 100 street children in the Southern Province of Bo.

Help a Needy Child International (HANCIL-SL) offered massive school aid to male children, within the ages of 8 to 17, at a colorful ceremony held at the Mark and Caroline Cook Home, Mattru Road in Bo.

Addressing guardians, foster parents and immediate beneficiaries, the HANCIL-SL Regional Coordinator, Isharka Mohamed Kamara, disclosed that the street children project was established in 2004 to complement the effort of the government in addressing the issue of street children across the country.

The school support, he went on, includes a year tuition fees, set of uniform, school shoes and learning materials.

He therefore encouraged the children to stay off the streets, whilst urging them to start preparing for a better future, so that they too can contribute to nation building.

Mr. Kamara further revealed that out of the 100 targeted children, 85 of them choose formal school, whilst 15 preferred skills training such as carpentry, masonry and auto mechanics.

Delivering his keynote address, Dr. Wusu Sannoh, Mayor of Bo City Council commended HANCIL-SL for offering such opportunities to the deprived children. He expressed hope that the donation will serve as an eye opener for children to engage themselves in more productive activities.

The Mayor encouraged guardians to invest on children, especially the girl child. He also encouraged the children to take advantage of the offer, and concentrate on their school work.

He also advised the children to always respect elderly people and their compatriots.

The city father called on other child protection agencies to emulate the footsteps of HANCI-SL, in order to make a world fit for the children.
