Sierra Leone Judiciary
Press Release

The Judiciary Goes Electronic
Thanks to the Peace Building Fund (PBF)

The Judiciary of Sierra Leone is making great strides in catching up and being counted as a player in the electronic age. In particular, it is to be noted that all Judges, Magistrates and a number of support staff, totaling 112, successfully underwent training in computer literacy skills last year. All those who attended have been certificated. The first to be certificated is the Honorable Chief Justice Umu Hawa Tejan-Jalloh. Judges have now been supplied with Laptop computers to enable them perform their duties more efficiently.

The Judiciary has had internet connectivity, at least for sometime now. In recent time however, this has been upgraded, thus providing internet connectivity to all Judges, Senior Administrative Staff and the upgraded and refurbished library. Communication and research have never been so easy and smooth at the Judiciary. More can be done to take this further by getting access to most needed legal material on the internet, such as subscription to Lexis Nexis and other similar facilities.

The Judiciary will soon be launching the electronic version of the Laws of Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Law Reports from as far back as 1976. When completed, legal research for Judges, Practitioners and Law students can be taken to a higher level, comparative to international standards. It is anticipated that this will be launched by the end of October 2009. All these developments have been made possible through the support from the Peace Building Fund.

Quite clearly, the Judiciary is poised to be part of the electronic move. The reform and restructuring of the Judiciary is intended to be holistic including infrastructure, logistics, capacity building and above all, improving the conditions of service of judicial staff, under the able leadership of the first woman Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, Hon. Justice Umu Hawa Tejan-Jalloh. The move towards excellence and improved justice delivery continues.
