Palliative Care Week to Bring Smile to Sierra Leone

A NonGovernmental and Humanitarian Organization, Shepherds Hospice is working greatly to increase opportunities for treatment and social support for people living with HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis and Cancer in Sierra Leone. With funds from Hospices UK, the organization has commenced a week long event of World Hospice and Palliative Care week on the theme Voices for Pain 2009.

Thousands of people around the world will be coming together to sing, dance, perform recite poetry and speak out to raise awareness and funds for hospice and
palliative services across the globe on October 10, 2009.

According to the Executive Director of Shepherds Hospice Sierra Leone Gabriel Madiye, series of activities have been out lined on advocacy and awareness rising for people living with HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis and Cancer to access treatment and also provide victims with social support to strengthen their income generating activities.

The Director said palliative care is a kind of care given in hospices as well as some other settings to improve the quality of life for patients and their families by providing best possible care for living with and dying from terminal illnesses. He went on that during that week long observance, World Hospice and Palliative Care will also commence with a week long of media discussions and training of people living with HIV/AIDS. He further mentioned that Cancer and AIDS patients including family members, health care workers and policy makers will converge for a concert at the Shepherds Hospice Headquarters at 433A Bai Bureh Road Lower Allen Town in Freetown, adding that poems and songs will be contributed by patients and family members during the celebrations to raise funds and create awareness of the palliative care services. He added that patients are now provided with oral morphine to treat moderate and severe pain. While maintaining that many people have been trained and equipped to identify, test and provide treatment and support to people living with HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis and Cancer in the Western Area and other Districts across the Country.

Gabriel Madiye further spoke about the need to improve on access to free treatment and training of volunteers that will embark on door to door visit to patients who cannot afford to reach Health Centers due to poverty, stigma and discrimination.

Additionally, his organization is currently working with partners in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and the German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Program.
