In Sierra Leone, Chris Charley & Nelson-Williams Sensitise Officers on MACP

The Assistant Inspector General of Police for the Western Area, Chris Charley and the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Nelson-Williams were yesterday October 8th 2009 seen at the Western Area Regional Police Command Headquarters, spending a considerable amount of their time educating and sensitising military and police officers on being respectful to civilians during the ongoing intensified security checks. The checks, as mandated by President Koromas recently re-enacted Military Aid to Civil Power (MACP) Protocol that enjoined the police and soldiers to provide internal security for residents commenced two nights ago and a lot of misunderstanding had resulted with residents not knowing what it all entailed.

Speaking to the assembled police and military officers, both Charley and Nelson-Williams firmly reiterated that the Police and Military hierarchy wanted to ensure the Presidents announced wishes to see a cessation of armed robberies and to safeguard citizens, come to fruition. They therefore stated that officers on duty at checkpoints should know that what the President wanted was for residents of Sierra Leone to feel safer and not for residents to feel frightened or harassed by checkpoints.

During this period, you must be extra careful and extra polite in your interactions with the civilian populace, AIG Chris Charley was overheard advising the men.

In a quick chat with the Awareness Times last evening, the two Security Chiefs confirmed that the military and police were going to ensure that President Koromas ardent vow to do away with the current feeling of insecurity in the country, came to fruition.
