In Sierra Leone, MACP Gains Momentum in Lumley

The introduction of a joint military and police patrol scheme in the whole country by the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone seems to be yielding results, especially in areas such as Lumley in the west end of Freetown. Prior to signing the new Military Aid to Civil Power (MACP) operation, residents in the country, including Lumley, were having sleepless nights as a result of the increased spate of armed robbery attacks.

Residents were living under constant fear of being attacked, robbed of their hard earned properties, raped and killed in some instances. Using the Lumley environs as a case study, areas including Beach Road, Crab Town, Portor and Kaningo, among others, were slowly becoming no go areas as early as 8pm daily, owning to the fear of robbery attacks. These areas are now enjoying the total reverse of occurrence since the declaration of the President. Residents are now freely plying the once terrorized routes and passing the nights with no security threats.

The presence of Sierra Leone Police and Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) personnel is felt in every nook of Lumley. They are actively engaged in foot and car patrols during the courses of the nights.

In a snap interview with the Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Lumley Police Division, Chief Superintendent Alhaji Gibrill Kabba-Kamara, the latter described the introduction of MACP as a welcome and timely idea. He added that with the joint security team, the issue of armed robbery in the Lumley vicinity is now a thing of the past. The LUC said residents should be rest assured that their lives and properties are now more than secured than before, as their security is collaboratively in the hands of the police and the army.
