As at time of going to press, the Awareness Times newspaper continues to monitor an intelligence indicating that there is a serious conflict between the board of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) headed by one Jacob Kanu, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, politically led by Minkailu Mansaray.
NASSIT is faced with this controversy in the wake of the battle for supremacy for the institutionís top job of Director General. Jacob Kanu, NASSITís Board Chairman, stands accused of defiantly appointing members of the Interviewing Panel without the knowledge of the Social Security Ministry as required by regulation. The Deputy Minister Moijue Kaikai is supposed to be a member of the Interviewing Panel but up to press time last night, his name was still not listed as a member thus creating misgivings that an orchestrated plan was afoot to stage-manage the choice of the next NASSIT Director General.
Sources alleged that infact, Chairman Jacob Kanu, in a show of defiance, circulated letters to his Ďselectedí Panel members even before informing the ministry. This situation reportedly left the Labour Minister, Minkailu Mansaray, displeased with the present board setup in NASSIT.
In the midst of such a worrying strife, sources close to the NASSIT board have divulged to the Awareness Times that the interview for the institutionís top job will be held today, Thursday 15th¬†October 2009, by this same controversial panel.
Pundits from various works of life have stated that the decision of the Interviewing Panel will serve as a make or break point in the affairs of the all-important state institution.
NASSIT will continue to thrive from strength to strength if the right decision is made and will degenerate into an appalling state if a fitting decision is not taken immediately.
As all eyes (including the presidency, the media, the international community and the general public) focus on the NASSIT Director Generalship brouhaha, the board of NASSIT also continues to swim in allegations of conflict of interest as against the requisite qualification.
Fingers are pointed on the Interviewing Panel for wanting to appoint or recommend for appointment on political and tribal lines instead of adhering to its oath of seeking the countryís interest above all things else. Local journalists, in credible media outlets across the country, have been actively engaged over the past few weeks in unearthing alleged ďill motivated and unpatriotic actsĒ of certain board members of NASSIT, including the Board Chairman, Jacob Kanu and for which the same Jacob Kanu has not seen it fit to debunk the allegations.
Meanwhile, the Awareness Times has also learnt that many NASSIT Board members are very displeased with the acts of these of their reported colleagues as far as this issue is concerned, and have threatened and vowed to expose all ill-motivated acts aimed at watering down the gains made thus far.
The citizens are also calling for President Koroma not to oversight this looming catastrophe in order to save NASSIT from going down the drains.
Efforts to contact the Board Chairman, Jacob Kanu and Minister Minkailu Mansaray for their comments on the topical issue proved unsuccessful, but the Awareness Times stands ready to publish their comments if they so desire.
