World Food Day 17-18 October 2009.
Food Security in Sierra Leone Ė Together We Can Do It
International NGOs Ė with funding from the European Union (EU)- are working with Sierra Leonean farmers, NGOs,Government and Local institutions across the country towards achieving food security for the people in Sierra Leone, in line with the recently launched National Sustainable Agriculture Development Plan (NSADP) and the¬† CAADP Compact process.
The current funding volume of the EU to International and National NGOs in the field of Food security¬†¬† totals to more than EUR 12 million. Combined with the funds implemented in partnership with FAO, WFP and¬† the Government of Sierra Leone, the EU has allocated a total of more than EUR 40 million to the Food Security sector in the country.
To mark the worldwide celebrations of World Food Days 2009, farmers, authorities and service providers will converge in Kabala, Koinadugu District on 17th¬†and 18th¬†October.
The theme for World Food Day in 2009 is ĎAchieving g Food Security¬† in Times of Crisisí in response to the recntglobal food crisis. The aim of World Food Day ďis to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and povertyĒ. In Sierra Leone we face the challenge of achieving food security for much of our population.
Six International NGOs working close with Sierra Leone institutions and civil society will take the opportunity of World Food Day to support farmers, community based organizations and authority from Freetown, Western Area, Tonkolili, Bonthe, Kamakwie, Bo, Pujehun Kenema, Kono and Koinadugu¬† District itself to reach Kabala, join the celebrations s and¬† exchange experiences with other farmers. In Kabala, they will jointly give information about the EU funded food security interventions in the following parts of the country.

Freetown and Western Area ;COOPI working in partnership with NAFSL Ė¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† National Association of Farmers,¬† SLYEO- Sierra Leone Youth Empowerment Organization and RUAF- Network of Resources Centre Urban¬† Agriculture and Food¬† Security and in Association with local and national institution under FUPAP Ėthe Freetown Urban¬† and Peri Urban Agriculture Platform.
. Freetown and Western Area : CONCERN Worldwide working directly in Tonkolili District and Western Area and working with ARD- Association for Rural Development and CADO-Community Animation and Development Organisation in Freetown
. Koinadugu District : CARE International in partnership with MADAM-Mankindís Activities for Development Accreditation Movement and VSO-Voluntary Service Overseas
. Bonthe District: Christian Aid working in partnership with MCSL ĖMethodist Church of Sierra Leone.
. Bo, Pujehun and Kenema Districts: Welthugerhilfe working in partnership with EFA Ė Environmental Foundation for Africa.
