A reputable non governmental organization (NGO) has, as part of its ongoing campaign, offered six-hours free medical services to over three hundred residents of the mountainous areas of Leicester and Tree Planting.

Hope and New Life Health Care Organization, which has been in operation for the past eleven years, undertook this latest free medical service on Saturday 23rd October 2009.

The Team of Doctors and Nurses

The organization has been engaged in this campaign for quite some time now and the campaign has benefited people in various communities with various forms of illnesses including heart attack, high blood pressure, diabetes, stress and stroke.

Following the six hours free treatment, a press briefing was summoned where the Programme Coordinator of Hope and New Life Health Care Organization explained that his organization is a humanitarian organization that is geared towards guarantying accepted medical standards in Sierra Leone.

Patients Queuing for Treatment

Mr. Vivian John said eleven months ago, a team of qualified doctors, nurses and members of his organization arrived in Sierra Leone and undertook a visit to the First Lady.

"During that visit, the team briefed Mrs. Sia Nyama Koroma of its intention to improve on the countrys health care services and facilities," he explained, adding that: "The First Lady welcomed the idea and promised to give the organization her continued support towards the achievement of its goals".

Nurses Supplying Drugs to Patients

Mr. John furthered that his organization caters for every Sierra Leonean who cannot afford the cost involved in seeking proper medication. "To achieve this, we have been rendering free medical services to people that are suffering from hypertension, diabetes, malaria, sickle cell, and other communicable diseases," he disclosed, adding: "About three thousand five hundred people have benefited from our services".

The Programme Coordinator states that it has been his organisations plan to reach communities deprived of proper health facilities through its community health services programmes, which are designed to give free medical services to the needy. "So far, we have succeeded in treating thousands of people residing in the Goderich, Sumaila Town, Murray Town and now Leicester/Tree Planting communities," he highlighted.

Dr. Small Administering Treatment to a Patient

One of the doctors administering the free treatments pointed out that their next immediate plan is to establish a general medical center within the western area, where free medical delivery services would be acquired from professional doctors and nurses.

Dr. Issac Small said they are, at present, operating a clinic where they only handle minor cases and refer major cases to government hospitals. He furthered that they get their funding from Hope New Life and Christian Community Deliverance Church (CCDE) in the United States of America.

According to the doctor, another immediate plan also is to help in the fight against maternal mortality.

Earlier, the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the organization for giving them free and proper medical services.

Councilor representing Constituency 92 Ward 326, thanked the donors and members of the organization for such a laudable boost.

Councilor Margaret Kargbo also urged the organization to kindly extend the good gesture to other communities within her constituency. She further advocated for the planned hospital to be constructed in her constituency, adding that her people would be much oblige to afford the land free of cost.

The free medical facility service given to the people of Leicester, Glouster and Tree Planting was boosted by the selling of rice, sugar and palm oil on a cost recovery basis to patients with diabetes.
