Opposition SLPP Meets Tomorrow

Sierra Leones main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party will be holding a meeting of their National Executive Council (NEC) tomorrow Saturday October 31st 2009. According to their National Chairman, John Oponjo Benjamin, the meeting was an ordinary NEC Meeting and not an emergency NEC Meeting.

We are supposed to summon a NEC Meeting at least once every year. We have been in office now for over seven months and it is time to call up our first NEC Meeting, John Benjamin informed.

According to Mr. Benjamin, who was speaking in an exclusive chat with Awareness Times last night, It will be a closed door meeting and no outsider will be witnessing it but we intend to address an Open Press Conference after the meeting.

Benjamin also confirmed that at the NEC Meeting, he would be giving a Report on the State of the Party and the ongoing activities of the party as well as hold discussions with other NEC Members on certain burning issues like the yet-to-be-submitted new SLPP Constitution as well as on the possibility for the party to call up a National Convention earlier than the next slated date of 2011.

John Benjamin also used the occasion of his chat with this writer to strongly reiterate that he was not seeking for the flagbearship of the SLPP at the next Presidential Elections slated for 2012.

I have repeatedly said it that I simply wish to strengthen our party to gain a formidable victory come 2012; indeed, you are right to say that a lot of party members have been approaching me to run but I have been very firm and adamant in rebuffing their appeals. There is no debate on this issue and there really should be no debate on it. John Oponjo Benjamin is not running for the Presidency, the Party Chairman assured.

Benjamin also stated that his problem with the new Constitution as currently prepared by Lawyer Eke Halloway and others was the so-called typographical and computer mistakes such as the one that caused an alleged computer cut-and-paste glitch to take away from the functions of the Chairman and mistakenly assign them to the National Secretary General as well as the controversy over whether the SLPPNA was a Region or by representative strength of membership.

He said those were his only problems with that document. People cannot force their will either by stealth or otherwise into our National Constitution.

"I have no other problems with that document. Nothing else in there is a problem for me. If other people have a problem with the prepared document, that is for them to defend but for me, I am okay and I have always been okay with the document except for those issues, John Benjamin ended last night on a very self-confident note.
