In Sierra Leone, Gbashi Gbashi at Law Office?

The Awareness Times newspaper has learnt from reliable sources at the Law Officers Department that senior officials of the said department are alleged to be engaged in massive corruption (now widely dubbed Gbashi Gbashi) however, attempts to get the law officers side of the story have so far proved futile..

The sum involved is $100, 000 (One Hundred Thousand United States Dollars). It was reportedly exchanged at Le3, 800 to $1, making a total of Le380, 000, 000 (Three Hundred and Eighty Million Leones) that has been allegedly chopped by a team of senior law officers including the Solicitor General, Mr. Tunde Cole.

Meanwhile, a team of investigative journalists from the Awareness Times newspaper, has, since last week Friday to press time, been trying to reach the Solicitor General and other senior lawyers of the department, but all officials continue to evade interviews on the issue.

Investigations conducted so far indicate that certain companies tendered bids for the exploration of oil in Sierra Leone. The said companies were instructed to deposit the sums of one million dollars each to serve as collateral. The terms and conditions of the collateral dictate among other things that any of the companies that do not keep to its obligations will forfeit the said amount to the people of Sierra Leone.

The company that bid for Lot No. 3 and deposited its collateral at the Guarantee Trust Bank did not live up to expectation and was, as per agreement, supposed to forfeit its collateral to the Consolidated Fund of the people of Sierra Leone.

The Government, during the summer vacation, instructed the Law Officers Department to file a legal suit aimed at recovering the one million dollars from the Guarantee Trust Bank.

The court, according to investigations, ruled in favour of the people of Sierra Leone.

The Awareness Times has however, learnt that due to some moves in the corridors of government, the sum of nine hundred thousand dollars was handled by some big guns in a manner that is yet to be determined, whilst the law officers has reportedly shared the one hundred thousand dollars amongst themselves.

Sources have it that the manner in which the money has reportedly been shared by the Solicitor General, Tunde Cole, has sparked confusion in the department.

Senior State Counsel Gerald Soyie and one Lawyer Tanu have reportedly received only one thousand dollars each as their share of the "Gbashi Gbashi", whilst the Solicitor General has allegedly conceal to himself a huge chunk of the said money, which he intends to splash this Saturday November 7, at a big time wedding of his son.

The alleged sum that the Solicitor General has "Gbashi Gbashi" for his sons wedding is direly needed by Sierra Leoneans to salvage the rate of maternal mortality, decline in education and other burning issues.

Citizens have raised concerns that the money in question was meant to be deposited in the consolidated fund and not in the pockets of few greedy top guns.

Meanwhile, the Awareness Times newspaper stands ready to publish the reactions of all the law officers mentioned in this story, if they so wish.
