APC Sacks Two Ministers

The Ernest Bai Koroma led All Peoples Congress (APC) government has relieved two Ministers of their duties as Ministers.

A press release issued on Wednesday 4th October 2009, from the Office of the President, indicates that it has pleased His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma to sack the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Sheku Tejan Koroma and the Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, Mr. Leonard Balogun Koroma.

The Press Release informed the general public that Mr. Sheku Tejan Koroma, was yesterday charged to court in Freetown by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

"While he is standing trial, Mr. Koroma has been relieved of his duties as Minister by His Excellency the President," the release pointed out, adding: "The Vice President Alhaji Samuel Sam-Sumana will with immediate effect supervise the Ministry of Health and Sanitation".

It has pleased the President, as stated in the press release, to appoint Dr. Komba Kono as the new Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, subject to the approval of Parliament.

In a related instance, the Anti Corruption Commission yesterday issued a press release informing the general public that Sheku Tejan Koroma has been dragged to court by the Commission on a three count indictment of abuse of office, abuse of position and willfully failing to comply with the laws, procedures and guidelines relating to the procurement of property, tendering of contracts and management of funds, contrary to the Anti Corruption Act 2008.

"The Commission alleged that the accused, Sheku Tejan Koroma on a date unknown between March and May 2009 in Freetown, abused his position as Minister. This is in respect of the award of a contract for the supply of medical consumables and regents to the Ministry, contravening the provisions of the Public Procurement Act 2004, through the improper award of the said contract," the release states.

Sheku Tejan Koroma was arraigned yesterday before the Hon. Justice Mary Sey. He pleaded not guilty to all three counts and was granted bail, whilst the matter stands adjourned to 2nd December 2009.

According to the release, this is the first time the ACC has charged a public official for the offences of abuse of office and position since the new Anti Corruption Act was passed in September.

Meanwhile, several people from various works of life yesterday commented that there was no cause for alarm over the sacking of the Health Minister, since the Deputy Health and Sanitation Minister, Mohamed D. Koroma can ably man the Ministry. Several citizens hold the strong believe that Mohamed Koroma can do better than the sacked Minister, as evident in his restless, patriotic, and no nonsense moves in fulfilling the dreams of his boss, President Koroma.

"Mohamed D. Koroma has always proved himself as a force to reckon with, and we are confident that he will not let us down this time we needed him the most," a senior medical doctor in Freetown yesterday told the Awareness Times newspaper in a telephone chat.
