The President, Ernest Bai Koroma of the Republic of Sierra Leone, on Thursday 5th November 2009, has once again assured the women of Sierra Leone that his APC-led Government believes in the potential of Sierra Leone women to be capable leaders as evident in his numerous appointments of women to powerful positions that had hitherto not been occupied by members of the female gender. President Koroma was speaking as he officially launched the Tree Planting Exercise on behalf of great women and environmental protection, at the 50/50 Group site at Tower Hill in Freetown.

It will be recalled that under this President, the country has seen its first female Chief Justice as well as a large number of female Supreme Court Judges, its first female Army Brigadier and other significant female appointees.

One of the Koroma appointees is the country's first female Chief Justice shown here as she turns the sod for the new Magistrate Building along Pademba Road next to the Prisons

The occasion was organized by the 50/50 Group with the aim of raising funds to construct an institution at the site, to protect the environment and to also honour the remarkable work of dynamic women who have contributed greatly to the development of Sierra Leone. The occasion attracted many important personalities including the President, His Vice, the Honourable Chief Justice who herself gave the Keynote Address, Diplomats, members of parliament and current and former ministers of government.

Also in his statement, President Koroma said he was gratified to launch the tree planting on behalf of all women in Sierra Leone. He said he appreciated the effort of the 50|50 Group in advocating for women to be side by side by men in terms of decision making and other developmental strides.

He also maintained that the venture taken by women, to fight against environmental degradation is part of his governmental agenda for change, noting that many efforts are being put in place to achieve the goal for environmental protection.

The 50/50 Group also launched a book title, Directory of Professional Women for Sierra Leone and the first copy was bidded for with the highest bidder being Madam Isatu Timbo who paid the highest bid of Le12 million which money she immediately paid in the dollar equivalent right on the spot.
