SLPP Wins but Charles Margai is Still A Force in Bo Town
By An Analytic Comment

The Bye-Elections conducted over the weekend to fill the vacant seat for Ward 232 of Bo District revealed that despite the fact that the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) was the dominant party in Bo, the Margai led Peoples Movement for Democratic Change was still a potent force in the District.

In recent weeks, reports had reverberated of massive defections and resignations from the PMDC and Bo was no exception as PMDC members resigned in droves from the party. Even the PMDC Honourable for the strongest PMDC Constituency, Hon. Legacy Sankoh, by his actions, showed he was now more aligned to the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) than to Charles Margai. The APC itself was spending cash to campaign like cash was going out of style. For APC, money was no object as Victor Foh, Moijue Kaikai and Alpha Kanu exhibited they controlled the State Coffers.

Add to the above factors, the fact that SLPP transported its entire National Campaign team to coordinate the Bye-Elections and one would be forgiven for expecting that the PMDC would do so badly as against the APC and the SLPP. However, the results released by SLPP Secretary General shows SLPP=3,616; APC=525 and PMDC=1,360 left many pundits amazed at how well the PMDC performed scooping one in every four votes (25%) against the APCs own mere 9%.

An interesting angle also is Charles Margai himself only spent four hours in the town during the entire period campaigns were declared open. It was the much younger Mohamed Bangura, PMDC Chairman who did all the groundwork but it is obvious that the charisma of Charles Margai in Bo District, whilst it might be on the decline, is still a force to reckon with seeing how it could stand up against the entire SLPP National Team and the heavily financed ruling APC Team.

The SLPP however, whilst it has every reason to rejoice and rejoice at the overwhelming victory should find ways and means of either further decimating the Charles Margai potency or luring Charles Margai over to their side away from the ruling APC.
A word to the wise...
