In Sierra Leone, FBC Students Plan Big Demo

The Students Union Government of the Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone, has disclosed plans to stage a peaceful demonstration within the colleges campus on Mount Aureole in Freetown on Monday 16th November 2009.

The students are disgruntled over the fact that all of their efforts to get the college authority to reduce the college fees, since it was exorbitantly increased for the 2009/2010 academic year, have proved abortive.

In a press conference held at the Students Union Building at FBC on Tuesday 10th November 2009, the President of the FBC Students Union, Mohamed Adam Timbo, disclosed to journalists that his government has been engaged in ceaseless dialogue with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, in order to appeal to the University to reduce the increment made this year.

He expressed disappointment however, that nothing has been done in the direction of addressing their concerns.

The President pointed out that the situation has become more unbearable owning to the fact that other Colleges across the country have reduced their fees.

The only colleges that are yet to reduce their fees are Fourah Bay College and the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS).

Mohamed Timbo furthered that the Fourah Bay College authorities have slated 13th November 2009 as the deadline date for payment of fees. The students, according to their President, view the deadline as another tactics by the college authorities to extort money from the students on grounds of late fees.

He threatened that they will consider storming the Freetown city with their strike protest if nothing is done after the campus strike.

The President said FBC and COMAHS continue to maintain with impunity exorbitant fees even after the Education Ministry had circulated letters to all colleges with regards fee reduction.

The students are demanding that the fees should be reverted to the old amount as directed by the Ministry of Education.

According to the students, accommodation fees also must not be increased since the facilities are not improved.

Among the other demands of the students include: no payment for computer fees as the facilities are not on campus; the deadlines for the registration must be extended.
