Media, Civil Society in Corruption Fight

At the ongoing UN conference on corruption in Doha, Qatar, dozens of civil society and anti-corruption activists have sounded the need to get civil society and the media more involved in the fight against corruption.

At a special interactive meeting at the Sheraton hotel, which also included some government representatives, the meeting emphasized the need for a partnership that will also involve young people who have not yet been corrupted, and those people who will serve as role models. This ties in neatly with the Integrity Award planned by the Anti Corruption Commission to take place on 9 December this year. It will award an individual who has excelled themselves in accountability and integrity and is a role model.

Participants in the Doha meeting agreed that the media had a crucial role to play and urged anti-corruption institutions around the world to collaborate more closely with them. Already the Sierra Leone Anti Corruption Commission has a memorandum of understanding with the media which, it was urged, should be replicated in other countries. Such collaboration, the meeting agreed, should not be at the final stage but rather should involve the institutions at every stage of the way. The media should collaborate in the fight against subornment not allow corrupt individuals to compromise them at the expense of the people.

Presenters from The Netherlands, Canada, UK, Tanzania, Argentina, Bangladesh and from agencies such as Transparency International, said civil society organizations and the media must not allow politicians to divide them, saying they should be pressing on for accountability in governance. A Canadian MP, John Williams, said were elected along party lines and that civil society and an independent media were the only institutions that should think the people and not the politicians.

The 5-day conference of the states parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) will on Thursday and Friday look more deeply into recovering assets stolen by public officials. This will include extradition of suspected fugitives who flee especially poor countries to live in the West. But it also includes those banks in Europe and America that keep stolen money by especially corrupt African leaders.
