In Sierra Leone, St. Edwards Teachers Want Principal Out

Teachers of the St Edwards Secondary School have demanded the immediate sacking of the Acting Principal of the School, Mr. Wyse.

This demand was made formal through a letter addressed to the Arch Bishop of Freetown/Bo Diocese. The letter was addressed to the Arch Bishop after several days of a sit down strike action by the teachers.

Thirty three, out of the thirty nine teachers in the afternoon shift signed the letter in which they forwarded reasons for their failure to attend classes.

The teachers also threatened that they have unanimously resolved to continue with their ongoing "no teaching action" until further notice, if their demands are not met.

According to the aggrieved teachers, Mr. Wyse is notorious for displaying negative attitude towards teachers. "He is highly temperamental, he has negative perception about teachers, poor human relationship with teachers, and he is always arrogant to teachers," the teachers accused their Acting Principal.

Administrative monopoly is among the numerous accusations made against Mr. Wyse. The teachers said he refuses to delegate responsibilities to teachers; marginalized PM shift teachers and treat teachers like common criminals.

The St Edwards teachers accused further that the Acting Principal is refusing to pay teachers allowances. Mr. Wyse, according to the teachers, abuses pupils rights and educational policies.

The disgruntled teachers told the Awareness Times newspaper that the Acting Principal is very hostile to parents/guardians.

"Mr. Wyse summarily dismissed part-time teachers when he knows very well that the PM shift is grossly under staffed," the teachers pointed out. The Acting Principal also stands accused of changing the schools PM shift badge without the consultation of the board or the teachers.

Meanwhile, efforts to contact the embattled Acting Principal for his comments on the allegations have so far proved unsuccessful.

Parents and pupils of the school have however, expressed grave concern over the brouhaha in the school. The parents are more concerned over the adverse effect the teachers protest might have on the pupils, and are therefore calling on authorities concerned to intervene and remedy the situation without further delay.
