Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, in-charge of Western Area, Chris Charlie, has expressed dissatisfaction over the recent illegal and unauthorized operation launched by some recruits of the Sierra Leone Police.

Police recruits in recent days launched an operation to intercept people, who are deemed to be dressed badly, and use whips to inflict several lashes on them.

These recruits mainly target the female population, especially ladies who wear mini-skirts and boys who wear shabby dresses.

AIG Chris Charlie has totally condemned the act of these police recruits, stating that there is no police policy or law in Sierra Leone that permits the recruits to undertake such an operation.

There is not a single clause in the Police Act that authorized any member of the Sierra Leone Police to arrest an individual for his/her dress code, the police boss said in a UN Radio interview yesterday 30
th December 2009.

He therefore warned the officers to desist from such acts forthwith. The Sierra Leone Police totally condemn the whole operation and urge all recruits to stop this illegal and unauthorized operation with immediate effect. Any one caught in such operation will be dealt with according to the law, AIG Charlie warned, adding: The SLP has not and will never authorize such an illegal operation as the SLP has no mandate to choose a dress code for anyone. He said everybody have the liberty to dress with anything that befits him/her.

Meanwhile, several people, especially religious leaders had earlier welcomed the said operation.
