Hassan Bangura, 21, was sentenced on a two-count charge of Fraudulent Conversion by the presiding Magistrate of Freetown Magistrate Court No. 3, Bankole Shyllon on Monday 4th January, 2010, when the accused made his first appearance in court.

According the Particulars of Offence, the accused person Hassan Bangura on Thursday the 17th December, 2009 at No. 1 Malama-Thomas Street in Freetown, received two blue cool-mans full with ice for the purpose of sale from the complainant one Daisy; but that the accused converted the cool-mans which were for safe keeping and the ice for sale into his own use.

The items are valued at five hundred and twenty thousand Leones (Le520, 000) for the two cool-mans and four hundred thousand Leones (Le400,000) for the ice in them.

The accused person pleaded guilty to both counts and said that the cool- mans were with one Mohamed, a Kabala driver, but that if given the chance, he could collected them from him. P. C Kamara who was prosecuting told the Magistrate that the accused had earlier told the police in his statement that he had actually sold the cool-mans for two hundred and fifty thousand Leones (Le250,000).

He was subsequently sentenced. But before passing sentence, Magistrate Shyllon asked him if he had anything to say before and the accused replied that he knew he had wronged the complainant and that he was asking for mercy.

Magistrate Shyllon sentenced him to one year in prison or an alternative of a fine of one million Leones (Le1,000,000).

In another development, one Ishmael made his second appearance in court before the same magistrate in the same court on a charge of Fraudulent Conversion.

Whilst testifying, the first Prosecution Witness (PW1) Betty Janet Labor said she is residing at No.12 King Street in Freetown and that she is running a canteen at the Ecobank. She told the court that sometime between the 1st and 30th April 2008 at Kroo Town Road in Freetown, she gave a wheel-barrow full of assorted food items to be taken to the canteen but that when she later arrived at the place, her staff and workers she met at the Ecobank said they have not seen the accused person whom she had entrusted the items to.

She added that the accused person was only seen on the 15th December 2009 and that he was then arrested and taken to the Central Police Station. She also said that all the food items are worth one million, two hundred and thirty thousand Leones (Le.1,230,000).

After listening to the testimony of the complainant, Magistrate Shyllon remanded the accused person and the matter was adjourned to Monday 11th January, 2010 when the second prosecution witness is expected to testify.
