SLPP Doles Out Le16m to Rape Victims

The Womens Wing of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) yesterday Wednesday 13th January 2010 dished out the total sum of Le16,500,000 (Sixteen Million, Five Hundred Thousand Leones) to eleven victims of the March 16 and 17, 2009 attacks on the Wallace Johnson Street Headquarters of the party.

Each of the eleven victims, who were allegedly raped and wounded during these deadly attacks, received the sums of Le1,500,000 (One Million Five Hundred Thousand Leones) each.

The money in question was made available by the SLPP North America Womens Wing Branch. Under the able leadership of Mariatu Bah, the Branch was able to raise the sum of Le18,962,000 (Eighteen Million Nine Hundred and Sixty Two Thousand Leones) for the raped a wounded victims.

Part of the said sum was diverted to the hospital bills of the rape victims.

The ceremony took place at the Walpole Street office of the National Womens Leader of the SLPP, Mrs. Isata Jabbie Kabbah (IJK).

It could be recalled that the rape victims, totaling seven in number, had earlier received the sums of Le500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Leones), whilst the wounded victims were given Le300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Leones) each, from the funds raised in a Trust Fund launched by the Womens Wing of the party.

In dishing out the money, Mrs. Isata Jabbie Kabbah (IJK), pointed out that all the victims received the same amount because UNICEF had earlier disbursed the sums of Le1,950,000 (One Million Nine Hundred and Fifty Thousand Leones) each to the rape victims, adding that the wounded victims never benefited from that donation.

Whilst expressing appreciation to the partys North America Womens Branch for such a laudable effort, Mrs. Kabbah, informed that the other SLPP woman, who was raped in Kono, was also a beneficiary of the disbursed money.

IJK also used the forum as an opportunity to single out and thank the Publisher of the Awareness Times Newspaper, Sylvia Blyden, for being the first person to deposit money into the Rape Victim Bank Account that was opened at the Access Bank.

She expressed disappointment that the SLPP raped women were never granted the justice they deserve, whilst pointing out that it was a clear show of disrespect for women by the APC led government.
