UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.Applications are invited from suitably qualified Sierra Leoneans for consideration to the following post:

Post: Nutrition Officer (2 positions) Level: NOB
Post 1: Infant & Young Child Feeding
Post 2: Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition
Duty Station: Freetown, Sierra Leone Date Required: Immediately Duration: 2 Years (with possibility of extension)

Major duties and responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the Nutrition Manager, (Post 1) will be responsible for the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of specific parts of the Infant and Young Child Feeding and Community based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) components of the Child Survival and Development programme, with the particular emphasis on the CMAM component of the community-based activities and (Post 2) with the particular emphasis on the IYCF component of the community-based activities:

Designs, prepares, implements, monitors and evaluates assigned project(s) or interventions. Analyzes and evaluates data to ensure achievement of objectives and/or takes corrective action when necessary to meet programme/project objectives. Contributes to the preparation of the annual workplan of the maternal and child Nutrition component of the Child Survival and Development programme;
Prepares programme documents and reports, as required, including contributions to funding proposals, donor reports and sections of annual reports;
Assists in development of appropriate programme communication strategies and interventions to improve the knowledge, attitudes and practices of caregivers in maternal and child Nutrition. Participates in inter-sectoral collaboration with other programmes and colleagues;
Undertakes field visits to monitor programmes, as well as conducts periodic programme reviews with government counterparts and other partners. Proposes and/or undertakes action on operational procedures affecting project management and implementation. Provides technical advice and assistance to government officials and other partners in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the maternal and child Nutrition project;
Participates in meetings with ministries responsible for programme/project review, and follows up on implementation of recommendations and agreements;
Assists government authorities in planning and organizing training programmes and activities for the management of malnutrition. Identifies training needs and objectives for the purpose of capacity building, programme sustainability, as well as promotion and advocacy;
Coordinates with the Operations/Supply staff on supply and non-supply assistance activities ensuring proper and timely UNICEF and government accountability. Certifies disbursements of funds, monitors and submits financial status reports to the Nutrition Manager or other Senior Programme Officers, as required;
Contributes to the development of the annual workplan of the Child Survival and Development programme, with emphasis on infant and young child feeding and Community based Management of Acute Malnutrition;
Contributes towards the preparation of the Situation Analysis by compiling data, analyzing and evaluating information on maternal and child Nutrition and in particular of infant and young child feeding and Community based Management of Acute Malnutrition;
Ensures the accurate and timely input of project information in the computerized programme system, and issues status reports for monitoring and evaluation purposes;
Prepares programme/project status reports required for management, Board, donors, budget review, programme analysis, annual reports, etc. Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS:

Education: University degree in Social Sciences or related technical field.
Work Experience: Two years progressively responsible experience in programme design, administration, monitoring and evaluation or related field.
Language: Fluency in English and another UN language required. Knowledge of the local working language of the duty station is an asset

Other Competencies & Skills:

Analytical and conceptual ability; communication skills.
Planning and monitoring skills; ability to organize work and projects.
Ability to make timely and quality judgments and decisions.
Computer skills, including internet navigation, and various office applications.
Commitment to continuous learning for professional development.
Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment, and establish harmonious and effective working relationships both within and outside the organization.
