President Koroma who also doubles as the Vice Chairman of the Commission arrived in Ethiopia on Saturday 30th January 2010 from Freetown to join his colleague Heads of State to discuss pertinent issues in the Continent.

H.E. President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma led Sierra Leones delegation to the 14th Ordinary Session Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union currently taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. President Koroma who also doubles as the Vice Chairman of the Commission arrived in Ethiopia on Saturday 30th January 2010 from Freetown to join his colleague Heads of State to discuss pertinent issues in the Continent...

This years AU Summit is themed: Information and Communication Technologies in Africa: Challenges and Prospects for Development.

Meanwhile, late Sunday, the AU elected President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi as the bodys new Chairman. This was against the wishes of Colonel Qaddafi of Libya who wanted a second term as AU Chairman. His bid was however thwarted by a determined group of African Presidents led by South Africa, Ethiopia and Nigeria. An angry Qaddafi then slammed his colleagues as being naive.

"I do not believe we can achieve something concrete in the coming future," said Colonel Qaddafi, before introducing President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi as his successor at the African Unions annual summit meeting, held in Addis Ababa. "The political elite of our continent lacks political awareness and political determination. The world is changing into 7 or 10 countries, and we are not even aware of it."

Colonel Qaddafis attempt to form a continental government is widely viewed as impractical given the political and economic disparities in Africa but it is reported that Qaddafi argued that individual African states are too weak to negotiate with major powers like the European Union, the United States and China.

New York Times reports that Colonel Qaddafi did not leave the lectern before giving the microphone to an unnamed representative of a Libyan-sponsored group of African traditional leaders who had crowned him "King of Kings" in a ceremony in 2008. The representative, bearing a golden scepter and trailed by an aide fanning him with a large feather, spent much of his address praising Colonel Qaddafi.

"You have the African people with you," said the man, who spoke in French and did not identify himself. "This is what is important, not politicking. It is politicians who have destroyed us."

Meanwhile, in his first address as AU Chair, President Bingu promised that the AU will redouble efforts to eliminate the current conflicts, prevent the occurrence of new ones, and continue to condemn, frustrate and isolate those who seek to rise to power through unconstitutional means. The African Union on Saturday also gave awards to two African scientists for the first time in the history of the organisation, to express its gratitude to science. It also unveiled its new flag at its 14th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government taking place in Addis Ababa. To tunes of the AU anthem, the new flag was hoisted by the outgoing Qaddafi. The new green coloured flag is decorated with 53 golden stars that symbolise the African states, making a circle. At the middle of the cycle there is a green map of Africa and an effigy with solar rays coloured white. The new African Union symbol was hoisted by members of Africa Union security body.

African Union Commission chairman, Gabonese Jean Ping, Jos Luis Zapatero representing the European Union, and the UN Secretary General, Ban-Ki-Moon, also participated at the event.

President Koroma is expected to deliver a speech on the value of education for all.
