Sierra Leone Health & Biomedical Research Symposium:Current Research and Future Directions

This is a meeting announcement for the 2nd annual Sierra Leone Health and Biomedical Research Symposium. The meeting will be held March 18-19, 2010, in Freetown, Sierra Leone; the exact location will be made available shortly. The meeting will be multidisciplinary and will bring together investigators from local and international agencies and Institutions to present and discuss biomedical and biobehavioral research. Presentations will include research on maternal and child health, nutrition, infectious diseases, cancer, ethnobotany and non-communicable diseases, and cover investigations of outbreaks, epidemiology, microbiological and pathological findings, social and psychological factors the impact of all the aforementioned on public health in Sierra Leone.

The symposium will involve scientific presentations as well as poster sessions, and include targeted discussions to identify research priorities and promote the establishment of collaborations among investigators. It is anticipated that this format will represent a forum for the exchange of ideas relating to the development of a biomedical research agenda for Sierra Leone.

 The Sierra Leone Health and Biomedical Research Group (HBIOMED-SL; http://www.hbiomed-sl.org) was formed as a result of a meeting entitled "Research Day" held on March 21, 2009 at the Conference Hall of the Faculty of Nursing, College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), University of Sierra Leone (USL). Participants at this meeting included Sierra Leoneans and non-Sierra Leoneans interested in research capacity development and the strengthening of biomedical/biobehavioral research in Sierra Leone from various institutions working in Sierra Leone, the United States and Europe.

Thursday March 18: Maternal and Child Health

Objective: To establish a framework for international research and collaboration with special attention to the interconnections of MCH and child development issues in Sierra Leone.

Friday March 19:

Objective:  To create a forum for the exchange of ideas relating to biomedical research in Sierra Leone, to identify priority scientific areas of interest critical to public health in SL, identify research needs, challenges, and to promote links with biomedical research Institutions in other countries including the US, UK, Europe and Canada.
