Three senior police officers on Tuesday testified before the Shears-Moses Independent Review Panel which commenced sittings on Monday this week at the National Stadium Hostel.

The mandate of the Review Panel (aka Commission of Inquiry) is to investigate the political violence that erupted between the two main political parties that resulted in the rape of several SLPP women, looting, arson and other violent acts allegedly perpetrated by APC hoodlums against SLPP supporters sometime last year.

First to testify was Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Western Area Mr. Chris Charley. Under oath, Mr. Charley explained all that he saw and was aware of beginning from 11th up to 16th March 2009, during a fracas between supporters of the Mayor of the Municipality, Herbert George Williams and SLPP supporters.

He further explained to the Commission the role of the Police and what they did to resolve the situation. Mr. Charley went on to explain all that was done by his men who were deployed at the scene during the said period of violence.

Next to take the stand was the Local Unit Commander (LUC) of Central Police Station, Chief Superintendent Sorie Brima Kargbo. He spoke vividly on how his men were promptly deployed to control the chaos that had erupted around the SLPP headquarters environs. He further said that the Police successfully controlled the pandemonium which took place between 13th to 16th March, 2009.

The Police Inspector who was in charge of the deployment at the scene on the day and place in question, Mr. Alfred Tamba Kamano also testified before the Commission.

In a confident tone, he told the Commission how he managed to bring the situation under control from 13th to up to 16th March 2009. He further informed the Commission that the fracas at a certain point became very tense and that he had cause to call for reinforcement that later put the violence under control.

Meanwhile, the Commission is also calling on the general public to attend the inquiry. The SLPP National Executive led by John Oponjo Benjamin, has been present at the Inquiry in full force this time as opposed to their absence from the Commission of Inquiry set up to investigate the claims of Rape and Sexual Assault of female SLPP supporters last year.
