President Ernest Bai Koroma has showered praises on members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) for their loyalty and dedication in serving the nation.

The RSLAF members were commended by the President yesterday Thursday 18th February 2010 at the Main Bowl of the National Stadium during the commemoration of the Armed Forces Day; a day celebrated as a Public Holiday in Sierra Leone.

President Koroma expressed that he was honoured to be in the midst of the Salone Soldiers, which was as a result of the trust and confidence he has in them.

According to him, the Armed Forces Day is commemorated in remembrance of falling soldiers who died in the course of protecting the country from misguided war mongers.

He noted that his government is not oblivious of the numerous challenges faced by soldiers in the country, whilst lauding them for standing the test of time through determination and dedication.

According to President Koroma, it is no secret that the countrys soldiers have progressed rapidly, adding that Sierra Leone can now boast of the most disciplined soldiers in the African continent.

President Koroma also announced with pleasure that officers who are presently on peacekeeping missions in other parts of the world are doing extremely well in their respective areas of postings.

"They are really proving to be true sons and daughters of Mama Salone" the President noted.

He furthered that the Anti Corruption Commission has rated the RSLAF 92% in upholding transparency and accountability, adding that the RSLAF deserves a path on the back.

He assured the soldiers that the government is considering the provision of a bag of rice monthly to each and every soldier as part of the numerous strides aimed at improving their welfare, adding that the APC led government will do all it can to upgrade the soldiers standards.

Ernest Koroma described the soldiers as the pride of the country and encouraged them to remain dedicated and loyal.

The Armed Forces Day commenced at the Law Court premises where the President received a Guard of Honour. This was followed by a procession through the major streets of Freetown right to the Main Bowl of the National Stadium.

Several high profile personalities including Cabinet Ministers, Members of the Judiciary and, Parliamentarians, attended the ceremony. The dynamic female Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Haja Afsatu Kabba, was among the government ministers who accompanied the President and actively participated in the ceremony.

All the forces in the country including soldiers, police, fire fighters, metropolitan police, prison officers and retired soldiers were in attendance and the programme was very colourful.

The newly constructed beautiful War Monument along State Avenue was also unveiled later yesterday evening.
