Members of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) have resolved to hold the partys National Delegates Conference to elect the partys Flagbearer in March 2011.

This resolution was reached on Sunday 28th February 2010 following three days of extensive debates on certain aspects of the partys constitution and the way forward. The confab that witnessed the amendment of the SLPP Constitution was held at the Bo City Hall, Bo City, Southern Sierra Leone, where the members of the SLPP converged over the weekend to map out strategies for the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

According to the Amended SLPP Constitution, National Executive Members of the party, with the exception of the National Chairman, are free to contest for the Flagbearer position but they should have tendered their resignation letters six months prior to the National Delegates Conference to elect the Flagbearer. The partys constitution has increased the numbers of delegates of each Constituency from two (2) to three (3). Womens Leaders of the SLPP in each of the Districts will automatically become delegates, whilst one (1) out of every fifty (50) member of the Diaspora will become a delegate.

The new SLPP Constitution dictates that four (4) Councilors from each of the SLPP dominated Local Councils will become delegates, and two (2) contestants in Local Councils where the SLPP is not represented will also become delegates.

There are indications that the SLPP is now more united than before, as members seem to be in total agreement with the new arrangements.

On the telephone line from Bo, SLPPs National Secretary General Jacob Jusu Saffa told the Awareness Times Newspaper that the conference ended up successful, whilst expressing satisfaction over the new arrangements. According to him, the outcome of the three days meeting has demonstrated the maturity of the SLPP in handling internal disagreements.

"Although the debates were controversial as usual, we maturely managed the process" JJ Saffa said.
