As She Keeps Scheduled ACC Appointment...: APC Chairladies Show Solidarity with Afsatu Kabba

Scores of women from the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) party yesterday Monday March 1st 2010 waited patiently for several hours in front of the Gloucester Street Headquarters of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) in solidarity with the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Haja Afsatu Kabba who was visiting the ACC for the second time, as scheduled, for a continuation of the Commissions investigations into allegations levied against her.

The women, who were seated quietly for several hours on the sidewalk of the ACC Headquarters and its environs, erupted into loud cheers when Haja Afsatu Kabba walked out of the ACC. Kabba had spent a total of almost 4 hours inside. The Minister was joyfully mobbed by the women who were made up of virtually all the APC Constituency Chairladies in the Western Area and a section of Port Loko District.

Mariama Seray Sesay, the District Chairlady for the West told Awareness Times that they were at the Anti Corruption Commission to send a strong message out to the detractors of the Honourable Minister that the Minister enjoys the full support of APC.

The women told Awareness Times that their presence at the ACC was not to disturb the ACC in doing its work but to send out a message that they have been monitoring all the various reports and were in total solidarity with the embattled Fisheries Minister.

"Let ACC carry on its constitutional duty. We understand they have a job to do and we respect them as they have important mandate but we are here to tell those people trying to use the ACC for political vendetta that we are on to their game and we will not take it anymore in silence," said Haja Fatu Tarawally. The ruling partys We Yone mouthpiece newspaper carried similar sentiments in its yesterday edition and held no prisoners as it castigated the detractors of Afsatu Kabba.

"Her support cuts across the women, the men, the old, the young and everyone in the APC. All the progressives are with Afsatu Kabba. We know that what she is doing is for the good of the country so we are here to tell the world that the anonymous letter from the so-called Concerned APC Elders is a fraud," said Haja Fanta Jawara, the Womens Leader of the Western Areas East District which runs from Clock Tower to Greater Waterloo area.

Haja Afsatu Kabba was visibly shocked at the massive show of support she received. Obviously stunned, all she was heard saying was "Albarka, Albarka" which is an Arabic Muslim phrase for "Thank you, thank you".

As at press time, it is not clear when next the minister will be returning to the ACC for the next scheduled date or if the ACC has concluded its investigations into the allegations levied against the minister. Neither the Minister nor the ACC could make any comments on this.

Meanwhile, the ACC Boss, Abdul Tejan-Cole returned back to Sierra Leone on Sunday night. Yesterday, the ACC issued out an Advert for the position of Ethics and Policy Officer. The ACC has faced serious criticisms lately over unethical actions undertaken by its staff ranging from suspected abuse of Sections of the ACC Act to leaking of insider information to the mass media to misuse of armed police personnel.

In a related development, the Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS), Mr. Ivan Agibola Thomas, who was on a one year contracted secondment from the ACC is reported to have resumed work back at the ACC yesterday as his one year contract with the SLBS has since expired and the SLBS is in the process of transforming itself into a Public Broadcaster.
